Meta Tags

When you view the HTML source for web pages, you may notice that they contain Meta tags. Meta tags can help you promote your web page as part of search engine optimization efforts if you use them wisely.

Some search engines use their own specific Meta tags, but the types listed are used by most search engines in some way.

Each one has a different purpose for the search engines that use them.

Here are the basics:

  • Meta Description tags describe what your page is about in search results. If you do not include a Meta description tag, search engines will use the first few lines of text they find on your page to describe your site, which can be confusing for searchers.
  • Meta Robots tags are used to determine how to index your page. This means that if you do not include Meta Robots tags, search engine crawlers will find your page and index and follow all the links on that page. If you want search engines to do something different, you can use Robots tags to tell search engines what to do instead.

The Meta description tag should be your page’s brief, keyword-rich description.

Remember, what you type in the Meta description tag might be displayed in search engine results (google normally chooses its own description to show on the search results pages), so you will want to write it in a way that helps readers understand exactly what they will see on your page.

Put the most important words near the front of the tag to be sure they will be displayed.

Not all search engines use the Meta description tag, but it can be a smart way to ensure your page is correctly represented to viewers on sites that do use the tag.

The Meta robots tag is not always mentioned as part of SEO promotion plans.

If you want search engine crawlers to move through your site using the links you submit, the tag involves only a little extra effort.

Depending on what result you want, you can tell the search engine to either index or not index links.

Nearly all search engines recognize and use this tag.

Another useful feature of the Meta robots tag is the ability to tell search engines to keep or not keep a cache of your page on their server.

The benefits of adding Meta tags to your page are substantial enough to justify the small amount of effort it takes to add them.

Spending just a few minutes to add these tags, particularly the robots tag, can improve search engine rankings and should be part of your optimization strategy.
